I’ve been photographing bars and restaurants for years now, initially because I thought there was an opportunity to photograph the emerging Sydney small bar scene and publish a coffee table book showcasing some of the sensational small bars that have opened in the last few years. The coffee table book idea gave way to the Barlife website, which is a small bar directory and it’s the creation of this website that really set me up as a specialist bar and restaurant photographer.
There is often so much to photograph in a bar or a restaurant, many aspects which other photographers may look straight past. Other than the obligatory wide shot and bartenders applying their trade, I like to look for items or arrangements that help make up the ‘fabric’ of a bar or restaurant. With so many interior designers getting involved with the bar styling these days and creating bars with spectacular interiors, there is no shortage of subject matter when I’m photographing a venue.
